IU Awarded Grant for Nursing Scholarships

January 25th, 2012

Through a grant from the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, Immaculata University is offering more than $38,000 in scholarships to be distributed among graduate students in the nurse educators’ track and undergraduate nursing students in the pre-licensure program. These competitive scholarships are available for current students for the spring and summer 2012 semesters.
In view of the present shortage of nurses and nurse educators, the Independence Blue Cross Foundation’s Nurses for Tomorrow initiative makes grants available to highly qualified educational institutions to fund nursing scholarships. Recognizing the valuable contribution that Immaculata’s programs make to the nursing profession, the Foundation offered the University a grant to help improve student recruitment, expand enrollment, promote retention, and increase graduation rates.
“Students and faculty at Immaculata University are most grateful to Independence Blue Cross for their ongoing generosity and support of nursing education,” said Sister R. Patricia Fadden, IHM, Ed.D., president of Immaculata University.
The Division of Nursing at Immaculata, whose 10-year accreditation was recently renewed by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), is one of the largest nursing programs in Pennsylvania. Seventeen full-time faculty, along with lab assistants and part-time faculty, serve more than 190 pre-licensure students and more than 80 graduate students.
In June 2011, the Division received the Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award from the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA). Through various courses, lessons on complementary medicine, clinical experiences, and research opportunities, the Division teaches nursing students to practice holistic patient care.
Immaculata’s pre-licensure B.S.N. prepares students academically, socially, and spiritually to practice within today’s complex health care systems. The nurse educators’ track of the M.S.N. program prepares graduates to teach nursing in a college setting, to provide health care counseling to patients, and to function in a staff development role, educating nurses on new procedures or assisting recent graduates in the transition from student to registered nurse.

Admissions and Financial Aid Center Opens

January 19th, 2012

Immaculata University’s Admissions and Financial Aid (AFA) Center has been completed and is ready to extend a hospitable welcome to guests. RC Legnini Building Contractors began the new facility in April and completed it in late December 2011.
“The Admissions and Financial Aid Center is both a building and an invitation,” says Sister Ann M. Heath, IHM, Ph.D., vice president for Academic Affairs. “As a building, it serves as a campus gateway full of grace and purpose, symbolizing the beauty of the campus and the functionality of its design. As an invitation, the AFA Center represents an open door to the campus. We are hopeful that it will entertain many prospective students who will realize that Immaculata University offers the best possible community of higher education for them to grow into their futures.”
With its lighthouse cupola serving as a beacon for many first-time visitors to the campus, the building is in a prominent location surrounded by woods. Students and their families will be graciously welcomed to Immaculata as they step from the covered front portico into a warm reception area. Cozy sitting areas with a two-sided stone fireplace provide an environment conducive to beneficial conversations between counselors and students. Approximately 8,500 square feet of finished space, including many new offices and a glass-enclosed conference room, will help to meet the needs of a growing student body. An additional 4,000 plus square feet will be available at the terrace level for future expansion and flexibility.
In 2008, a consultant recommended that the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices be more accessible and easier to find. After a few years of working on the project, a team of professionals managed by Immaculata’s Office of Capital Planning and Construction developed plans for the new building.
